ACTIVITY 3 : TOWARDS AN EQUITABLE LEGAL FRAMEWORK FOR THE DEPLOYMENT OF CDR TECHNOLOGIES IN CANADA.

We will consider the equity and justice dimensions of CDR project siting in Canada. This will include an examination of the current legal approach to engaging with communities where CDR may be deployed, identify examples of equity/distributional justice issues that may arise, and how legal tools have been used (effectively or not) to address such issues. A review of existing public participation mechanisms that might be triggered in the process of seeking federal and provincial (Alberta) permits for CDR projects will be conducted. Finally, an exploration of the extra-legal tools for obtaining social license, such as community benefit agreements. We will use these findings to build a framework for CDR that considers equity and justice for deployment of CDR technologies
