Steven Bryant is the co-lead on Activity 7. Steven came to the University of Calgary after building academia’s most prolific research program on geologic storage of CO2 and leading a US Energy Frontier Research Center (Department of Energy) on CO2 storage at the University of Texas at Austin. As a Canada Excellence Research Chair, he built a multidisciplinary program in materials engineering to reduce or even eliminate the environmental impact of oil and gas production and led the University of Calgary’s successful bid to the Canada First Research Excellence Fund (CFREF) to move oil and gas toward a sustainable low-carbon future. Audacious at the time, this presaged commitments less than three years later from many major oil companies to become “net zero.”
