Activity 11

ACTIVITY 11: EXTRAPOLATING FROM THE LOCAL: DEVELOPING BEST PRACTICES FOR THE INCLUSION OF CDR IN COUNTRIES’ NATIONALLY DETERMINED CONTRIBUTIONS UNDER THE PARIS AGREEMENT.

This activity will provide policy options to support the potential inclusion of CDR in Canada’s short- and long-term mitigation commitments under the Paris Agreement. Academics and policy experts have recommended that CDR should be treated differently from emissions reductions due to the associated governance challenges. However, currently the Paris Agreement rules are silent on this point, and key decisions remain in the hands of individual states parties. This activity seeks to inform the development of intelligent legal and policy strategies at the national and international levels, considering legal, socio-political, economic, and justice considerations.
