ACTIVITY 6: ASSESSING ROCKS AND MINING WASTES FOR CO2 MINERALIZATION.
We are assessing the potential of mineralization to remove CO2 from the atmosphere in Canada. Existing data sets and new samples are being used to characterize the mineralogy and reactivity of rocks and mineral wastes to CO2. This will allow us to make the most robust estimate of CO2 mineralization potential for any country to date. We will use the National CCUS Assessment Framework from NRCan to evaluate the economic potential and associated environmental impacts of mineralization regionally and nationally. We will examine use of CO2 mineralization to improve recovery of critical metals, make marginal ore deposits economical to mine, and displace conventional, high GHG construction materials.
